Estefan recalls the bleak diagnosis: "They always have to give you the worst case scenario, and I was paralyzed from that accident." The road ahead seemed uncertain, but with unwavering determination, she embarked on a journey of recovery, defying medical expectations.

"My father had been in a wheelchair, so I understood what the families go through," she confides. "Being in a wheelchair, though, was one of my biggest fears." The prospect of losing her mobility haunted her, but she refused to let fear consume her.

Preemptive measures became necessary. "We put an elevator in our house, because one day, I felt I was going to need it… and thank God that I did, because I used it for a long time," she reveals, her words laden with both gratitude and an understanding of the challenges faced by those living with paralysis.

Inspired by her personal experience and her father's struggles with Agent Orange poisoning and multiple sclerosis, Estefan partnered with Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. The organization, co-founded by former Miami Dolphins player Nick Buoniconti and Dr. Barth Green, has made significant strides in paralysis research, employing over 175 dedicated individuals.

"This foundation has made amazing strides with research projects," Estefan enthuses, her optimism unwavering. "I believe there will be [a cure for paralysis], you have to. Look at how many things have been cured." Her belief is rooted in the remarkable advancements in medical research, particularly in the treatment of cancer.

Estefan's recovery was a testament to her indomitable spirit. "Six months after the accident, I was able to put my underwear on myself. I wanted to throw a party," she says, her words reflecting the significance of even the smallest achievements.

Her determination to return to the stage pushed her to new heights. "That's when I started even thinking about getting back on stage, and to show people, ‘Hey, you can go through difficult things depending on how you deal with it.’" Just 20 days shy of a year after the accident, she made her triumphant return, inspiring countless others with her resilience and unwavering spirit.

Estefan's unwavering optimism and generous support for paralysis research have made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals. Her journey is a beacon of hope, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit can triumph with unwavering dedication and ceaseless hope.
