Corliss recalled the demanding conditions at Ground Zero: "Every day, Bretagne started to become part of the fabric down there. People needed him. Even some of the search and rescue handlers were depressed, and their dogs were depressed because they weren't finding anybody."

Another canine hero was Nikie, a golden retriever and K-9 disaster relief therapy dog handled by Frank Shane. On that fateful morning, Shane and Nikie were on their way to Ground Zero when they encountered a New York Port Authority officer who recognized Nikie from the day before.

Nikie's dedication and love for his work was evident, even after the recovery efforts at Ground Zero ended. "He had a lack of a sense of purpose," Shane said of Nikie's depression after they stopped going to Ground Zero.

Sadly, many canine heroes of 9/11, including Nikie, succumbed to aggressive forms of cancer, an illness linked to their work at Ground Zero. Bobbie Snyder and Willow, a Labrador retriever, were also part of the relief efforts at Ground Zero. Willow used her training and keen senses to search for human remains under the rubble, bringing closure to families desperate for answers.

"We were told that that was our job, was to find our firemen and to get as many remains as we could," Snyder said. "We did it as a team."
