New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby has been ruled out for Game 2 of the first round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers due to an injury suffered during the first half of Wednesday's contest. The absence of Anunoby, a key contributor for the Knicks this season, is a significant blow to their hopes of tying the series going into Game 3 at home.
New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby has been ruled out for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers due to an injury suffered in the first half of Wednesday's contest.
Anunoby, who had been averaging 17.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game during the regular season, exited the game just before halftime with a non-contact injury to his right knee. He underwent an MRI after the game, which revealed a Grade 1 MCL sprain.
The Knicks announced the news in a statement released shortly after the game, saying that Anunoby would be reevaluated in 10-14 days. This means that he will likely miss the remainder of the series, which is currently tied 1-1.
Anunoby's absence is a major blow to the Knicks, who are already without several key players due to injury. All-Star forward Zion Williamson, starting center Mitchell Robinson, and backup guard Immanuel Quickley are all currently sidelined.
The Knicks will need to find a way to fill the void left by Anunoby, who was one of their most consistent players during the regular season. He was a reliable scorer and defender, and his absence will be felt on both ends of the court.
Quentin Grimes, who started in Anunoby's place in Game 1, is likely to get the nod again in Game 2. Grimes had a solid outing in the series opener, scoring 12 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.
The Knicks will also need more production from their other starters, including RJ Barrett, Julius Randle, and Jalen Brunson. Barrett and Randle have both struggled with their shot in the playoffs so far, while Brunson has been a bright spot, averaging 26.5 points and 6.5 assists per game.
The Knicks will host the Pacers in Game 3 on Friday night at Madison Square Garden. They will need to win at home to avoid falling behind 2-1 in the series.
Here are some additional details about Anunoby's injury:
* The injury occurred when Anunoby landed awkwardly after attempting a jumper in the second quarter.
* He immediately grabbed his right knee and limped off the court.
* He was ruled out for the remainder of the game shortly after halftime.
* The Knicks are calling Anunoby's injury a "week-to-week" situation.
* His status for the rest of the playoffs is uncertain.
