Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber made MLB history with his 14th leadoff home run of the season, but his night was cut short due to left elbow discomfort.

In a historic moment tempered by concern, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber shattered the MLB single-season record for leadoff home runs Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, only to be removed from the game in the fourth inning due to left elbow discomfort.

Schwarber etched his name into baseball lore with a towering 437-foot homer off Rays starter Taj Bradley in the bottom of the first inning. The solo shot gave the Phillies an early 1-0 lead and marked Schwarber's 14th leadoff homer of the 2023 season, surpassing Alfonso Soriano's previous record of 13 set in 2003 with the New York Yankees.

Schwarber's historic homer was his 35th of the season and the 45th leadoff homer of his career, with 32 coming since he joined the Phillies in 2022. However, the celebration was short-lived as Schwarber's night ended prematurely when he injured his elbow diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt by Rays catcher Logan Driscoll in the bottom of the third inning.

Schwarber limped off the field and was replaced at designated hitter by Buddy Kennedy in the fourth. After the Phillies' 9-4 victory, manager Rob Thomson announced that Schwarber had hyperextended his left elbow, as reported by The Athletic's Matt Gelb.

Despite the injury, Schwarber is expected to play Wednesday's game against the Rays, depending on how he feels. "We'll see how he is tomorrow," Thomson said. "He's feeling better, but we'll see how he is when he wakes up in the morning."

Schwarber's injury is a blow to the Phillies, who rely heavily on his power. The 31-year-old leads the team in home runs and RBIs (95). His hot streak in recent games has been particularly impressive, with seven home runs in his last eight games, including three in his first at-bat of a game.

Schwarber has led off for the Phillies in all 133 games he has started this season and has been a key contributor to their success in the National League East division race. The Phillies currently hold a 4-game lead over the Atlanta Braves with less than a month remaining in the regular season.

The team will be anxiously monitoring Schwarber's status as they navigate the final stretch of the season and push for a playoff berth. If Schwarber is unable to return to the lineup, the Phillies may need to adjust their batting order and find other ways to generate offense.

Schwarber's historic achievement is a testament to his power and consistency, but the injury casts a shadow over his record-breaking night. The Phillies will hope that Schwarber can return to full health soon and continue to contribute to their playoff aspirations.
