Petty, a former NCAA volleyball player, says she has witnessed firsthand the unfair advantages that biological men have over women in sports. She points to the case of Blaire Fleming, a biological male who plays on the San Jose State University's women's volleyball team. Fleming has led the team to unprecedented success, breaking records and earning national recognition.

Petty says she was forced to compete against Fleming and share a residence with him without prior notice of his biological sex. She argues that this violates her right to consent and creates an unsafe environment for female athletes.

"Women's voices in college sports matter," Petty said. "We fought hard for – and deserve – the right to say no when we do not consent to playing alongside men. It’s time to hold the NCAA responsible for this reckless disregard for women’s safety and fair play in college sports."

Petty's concerns are shared by many other female athletes and organizations. In August, 23 U.S. senators wrote a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker urging the organization to prohibit male participation in women's athletics. Several other elected officials, women's organizations, and NCAA female athletes have also demanded the same.

However, Baker has refused to take action, arguing that the NCAA policy is in line with other national governing bodies and that member schools must abide by their state's regulations.

Critics argue that Baker's stance is simply a way of avoiding responsibility. They point out that most NCAA schools travel outside of state protection to compete in NCAA competition, giving the organization the opportunity to implement a national policy.
