PIPE-i, a remarkable robotic vehicle, ventures into hazardous culverts and tunnels, enhancing safety and precision in asset surveys.
Introducing PIPE-i, the innovative six-wheeled robot that's revolutionizing the world of infrastructure inspection. Developed by Beca, a leading engineering firm in New Zealand, PIPE-i is a robotic survey vehicle designed for the most hazardous and confined spaces, such as culverts and tunnels.
In June 2022, structural engineers at Beca faced a daunting challenge: inspecting a severely damaged culvert beneath a busy highway. Commercial tools proved inadequate, sparking the idea for a custom solution. A year later, PIPE-i emerged, tailored to the unique demands of confined space inspections.
PIPE-i: The Revolutionary Robot Advancing Infrastructure Inspection
PIPE-i boasts an advanced design, blending engineering prowess with innovative materials. Its 3D-printed body, crafted from polycarbonate and carbon fiber, offers exceptional strength and lightweight agility for traversing tight spaces. Six individually suspended wheels ensure stability on uneven terrain, while four 850-lumen LED panels illuminate the darkest corners.
At the heart of PIPE-i's capabilities lies a sophisticated suite of sensors and imaging technologies. A pan/tilt forward-facing camera and lidar sensor create detailed spatial maps of the environment. The onboard Leica BLK360 3D scanner, concealed within a lidded compartment, captures stunning 3D scans of the culvert surroundings when needed.

PIPE-i is controlled via real-time radio signals, providing operators with a live video feed. It also features proximity sensing for safe navigation in tricky environments. Beca is exploring artificial intelligence integration to enhance PIPE-i's autonomy, enabling it to make independent decisions during inspections.
After an inspection, PIPE-i generates a 3D point cloud model of the culvert, offering detailed insights into its condition. An optional omnidirectional camera captures a complete 360-degree view for comprehensive analysis.
PIPE-i: The Revolutionary Robot Advancing Infrastructure Inspection
PIPE-i's adjustable suspension system allows it to modify its height, accommodating overhead obstacles and enhancing scanning capabilities. This adaptability is crucial for navigating the unpredictable conditions found in stormwater culverts.
PIPE-i has revolutionized infrastructure inspection, keeping humans out of harm's way while delivering unparalleled accuracy and efficiency. Its innovative design and future enhancements promise continued advancements in this critical field.
PIPE-i: The Revolutionary Robot Advancing Infrastructure Inspection
PIPE-i's versatility extends beyond infrastructure inspection. It could find applications in industries such as mining, construction, and disaster response, where hazardous conditions need to be assessed safely and effectively.
PIPE-i is a testament to the power of innovation in the face of challenges. Its unique capabilities have transformed the approach to infrastructure inspection, setting a new standard for safety, precision, and efficiency. As robotic technology continues to evolve, we can expect even greater advancements in this and other vital sectors.
