The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Sneed got into a fight with the son of Tanseen Sherrod, Fox Detroit reported.

Sneed allegedly stole a handgun from the other teen. When Sherrod tried to intervene in an effort to de-escalate the dispute, she was fatally shot by Sneed, authorities said.

"This is a tragic case that has devastated a family," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. "We will continue to work diligently to hold this defendant accountable for his actions."

Sneed is being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on Sept. 19.

If convicted, Sneed faces up to life in prison.

The shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving teenagers in Michigan. In recent months, several teens have been shot and killed in Detroit and other cities across the state.

In July, a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in Detroit while riding in a car with his family. The following month, a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in Flint while sitting on his porch.

The violence has prompted calls for increased gun control measures and more investment in youth programs.

"We need to do more to address the root causes of violence in our communities," Worthy said. "We need to provide our young people with the support and resources they need to succeed."
