Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has announced a bizarre plan to move Christmas to October, a move widely seen as an attempt to distract from the ongoing political turmoil following the disputed presidential election. Opposition leaders and international observers have condemned the announcement as an outrageous mockery of the Venezuelan people.
Venezuela's ongoing political crisis has taken a surreal turn with President Nicolas Maduro's announcement that Christmas will now be celebrated in October. The move has been met with widespread outrage and mockery, with critics condemning it as a desperate attempt to distract from the disputed presidential election and the subsequent crackdown on the opposition.
Maduro made the bizarre announcement during his weekly television appearance on Monday, claiming it was a "tribute" to the people of Venezuela. "It's September, and it already smells like Christmas," Maduro said. "That's why this year, as a way of paying tribute to you all, and in gratitude to you all, I'm going to decree an early Christmas for October 1."

However, the announcement has been met with widespread ridicule and anger. Office workers in Caracas told the Associated Press that "without money and with his political crisis, who can believe that there will be an early Christmas?"
Venezuelan foreign policy expert Jorge Jraissati believes Maduro's announcement is a desperate attempt to portray himself as an "idiotic character," but insists that it will not distract Venezuelans from the real problems facing their country. "Our political institutions are hijacked, our economy is destroyed, and millions of people have left our country seeking a normal life," he said.

The announcement also comes amid international condemnation of Maduro's decision to pursue an arrest warrant for his opponent, Edmundo Gonzalez, who is widely considered by the international community to be the true winner of the July 28 election.
"Maduro and his representatives cannot indefinitely suppress the legitimate aspirations of the Venezuelan people and maintain power by force," U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said. "The will of the people and their rights must be respected."

Protests have erupted across Venezuela since the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council declared him the winner of the presidential election, despite data indicating a landslide victory for Gonzalez. Maduro secured office in 2013, but critics allege that the United Socialist Party of Venezuela has effectively ruled as a dictatorship since then.
Opposition leaders have accused the government of fraud and have demanded evidence to support Maduro's claim to victory. The Carter Center and the United Nations have both declared that the election lacked credibility.

In response, Maduro ordered the Venezuelan Supreme Court, which is controlled by his party, to conduct an audit of the results. Unsurprisingly, the court ruled in Maduro's favor, further inflaming the opposition.
"Today, Venezuela's TSJ has finally consolidated the fraud," said Gabriel Boric, the leftist president of Chile. "The Maduro regime obviously welcomes with enthusiasm its ruling... there is no doubt that we are facing a dictatorship that falsifies elections."
